Coastal to nearshore hydrodynamics along the Northwestern Méditerranean coast. The european project NAUSICAA and the GLADYS fellowship
The INTERREGIII-C BEACHMED-E program (www.beachmed.it) is funding the european project NAUSICAA. This project brings together five distinct research institutes from Italy, Greece and France, since june 2006 until june 2008. Our lab Geosciences-M is the leader of this projet. The GLADYS fellowship (www.gladys-littoral.org) joins together research institutes and coastal managers in Languedoc-Roussillon to share equipments dedicated to coastal and nearshore in-situ hydrodynamic measurements. Geosciences-M also belongs to several national research projects dedicated to in-situ measurement and hydrodynamic modelling (ANR COPTER, LEFE-IDAO Alcinoos, LEFE-IDAO «déferlement»).
In this framework, Geosciences-M is involved in three main activities:
1)to characterize wave climates and currents from the mild-shelf scale to the nearshore scale along the Languedoc-Roussillon sandy shoreface;
2)to study coastal hazards induced by waves and currents: erosion and sea elevation along the coastline;
3)to improve models dealing with mild-shelf to nearshore hydrodynamics processes, and to validate these models with new in-situ data sets.
To achieve this, we planned to deploy since january 2007 a large set of equipments amongst them 7 ADCPs with wave module, 4 ADVs, several wave gauge and 2 directional wave buoys.
We display the selected sites, the on-going nearshore and coastal campaigns, their goals and firsts results. We also pay attention to the various deployment protocols.
Last, our numerical modelling duties focus on 3D wave / current interaction at mild-shelf scale, coastal to nearshore nested modelling and 3D nearshore modelling. We also planned to initiate modeling of sand transport.
The models used (SYMPHONIE, RESYFE, SHORECIRC) are presented and some numerical results and their consequences are displayed.
